Intro

This blog is some thoughts on mathematics and the profession as I continue to learn.  This is mostly for me to solidify my understanding, but hopefully it's helpful for others too. More content coming soon. (All thoughts my own, and not representative of North Carolina State University, the National Science Foundation, Sloan Foundation, or any other supporting bodies.)

Negotiating job offers

We are now deep into hiring season, and lots of interviews and offers are happening.  This will be short, but I want to point out a few things to keep in mind when negotiating.  (This will be mostly for postdocs/tenure-track positions at R1 universities.)  Also, remember that this is my opinion, and there are lots of other legitimate views on negotiating. - My view is it is unlikely you will be viewed as a "primadonna" or come in with enemies if you negotiate!  Many people do it and it does not mean you do not appreciate the offer/opportunity that you might be getting.  - Reach out to lots of people to ask for advice negotiating.  Ask your postdoc advisor, PhD advisor, recent hires you know in your field, senior faculty in your department in other fields, etc.  Someone will give you bad advice, someone will have a clever idea you haven't thought of, etc.  It's likely people had different job market experiences than you, and so your advisor's negot...

Weird hair and mathematicians

Warning: This short post touches on some heavier topics like suicide and relationship violence.  If you are having a mental health emergency, please reach out to a mental health professional, call 911, or a suicide / crisis hotline (in the US, the canonical number is 9-8-8) .  This post is a bare bones version of what I wish I could write here, but I'd rather get something out and maybe revisit topics in more detail later. Math is weird and has weird people in it.  I remember a close friend in college told me he was a math major because he liked the people - I agree (usually).  Mathematical culture seems to really emphasize being accepting of the weirdos, purporting that a love of mathematics is what matters.  Barefoot at a conference - not even an eyeroll.  (I had my barefoot phase in grad school too.)  Blue hair, you do you!  I like having the space to be weird, but of course, how welcome you are treated in the community can depend on race, gend...

Is mathematics a job or a way of life?

I apologize in advance because this post is maybe more pouty than most.  Although, in my defense, I do think blogging caught on because of angsty teenagers... At some point in college I read Hardy's "A Mathematician's Apology".  These days, I hate this book and maybe will make a blog post at some point just to complain further about it.  But at the time, it made me think I wanted my life to be math and that the only way to do math was for it to completely consume my life and try to pursue some false notion of greatness.  Fast forward about 15 years:  I don't always love mathematics like Hardy or any of the "great" mathematicians of the past.  I enjoy research, value the teaching/mentoring (except for grading), and sometimes like the service I do.  I get a lot of joy out of moments of success (however I've defined that), having wonderful colleagues and collaborators, and I'm very lucky to be in the position I'm in.  That said, I don't care...
